Presidential election: Murmu to visit Meghalaya to garner support

Shillong: Droupadi Murmu, presidential candidate for BJP-led NDA will seek the support of ruling party MLAs in Meghalaya on Wednesday during her visit, officials said.

According to a senior official, Murmu is touring the states to mobilize electoral support for the July 18 elections. They will reach Meghalaya on July 6 afternoon. During the visit, Murmu will interact with MPs and MLAs of the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance at the Orchid Lake Resort here.

The BJP, which has two MLAs in the House of 60, is part of the National People's Party-led coalition in Meghalaya. The five suspended Congress MLAs who had pledged support to the MDA government are likely to vote in favour of Murmu, sources in the ruling coalition said.

The opposition TMC has 12 MLAs in the Assembly. NPP and Congress have one MP each in the Lok Sabha and NPP has one MP in the Upper House of Parliament.
