A 29-year old police officer has been shot dead by terrorists in the Batamaloo area of Srinagar on SUnday evening. The officer, identified as Taufiq Ahmad in an ANI report, was brought dead on arrival to the SMHS hospital in Srinagar. He reportedly had a bullet wound in the head.

"The number of terrorists involved in the attack is being ascertained" an unnamed official said according to the Greater Kashmir, a local news outlet. "A massive operation to track the terrorist/s is underway." On Friday a pitched gun battle took place between terrorists and security forces at the SKIMS hospital in Srinagare civilians were used as a cover for the terrorists to escape.

This is the second killing to take place in SD Colony, Batamaloo as in October a Power Development Department employee was shot dead by militants. Srinagar and surrounding areas in Jammu and Kashmir have been plagued by a string of murders attributed to militants, who also shot and killed a school teacher and principal in the heart of Srinagar in August.

The Indian military has launched an operation combing through the Rajouri-Poonch area for militants linked to the Lashkar-e-Taiba and Pakistan.
