Police system collapsed, so Yatra cancelled: Rahul Gandhi
cancel

New Delhi: Rahul Gandhi’s Bharat Jodo Yatra was stopped after the Congress leader K C Venugopal alleged security lapse in the last leg in Jammu and Kashmir.

Rahul Gandhi was whisked away in a car as the Yatra reached at Qazigund in Banihal following the senior Congress leader's allegations.

Subsequently, the leaders refused to continue the march until further security was provided to them, according to India Today.

“There is no security. We cannot allow Rahul Gandhi to go ahead without security. Even if he wants to walk, we can't allow it. Senior security officers have to come here,” India Today quoted KC Venugopal as saying.

When the march reached Banihal in Ramban district, Jammu and Kashmir National Conference leader Omar Abdullah joined Rahul on Friday.

Abdullah walked for about 2 km to the Truck Yard, before other senior leaders of the National Conference, including NC Provincial President Nasir Aslam Wani and former NC minister Sakeena joined them.

The Bharat Jodo Yatra, resumed this morning from Old Highway in Qazigund in Ramban district, will enter the Kashmir valley through Qazigund and reach Anantnag district's Khanabal area.

Rahul Gandhi told the media that the police system was collapsed, adding that his security people were not comfortable with security arrangements, hence the yatra was cancelled.

The yatra, started from Kanyakumari on September 7, spent several months on the road before reaching Jammu and Kashmir via Punjab.
