New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will take oath on Saturday becoming the first leader to govern the country for the third time since Jawaharlal Nehru.

During his meeting with President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati to submit resignation, he was reportedly requested to continue till the swearing-in ceremony, NDTV reported.

The BJP emerged with 240 seats meaning 32 seats short of the 272-majority mark forcing it to rely on alliance partners for numbers.

In 2014 the saffron party gained 282 seats and in 2019 it rose to 303 seats.

Now the party has to depend on the 53 seats won by the parties in the National Democratic Alliance that the saffron party leads.

Modi defeated Ajay Rai of the Congress by less than 1.5 lakh votes in Uttar Pradesh's Varanasi.

Terming the poll results a "victory of the world's largest democracy", Modi said the NDA would stake claim to form the government for a third time.

Earlier today the PM Modi chaired the meeting of current the Union Cabinet for the final time .

The BJP set the target of 370 seats but the Opposition made an astounding return winning 232 seats. However, the BJP still remains as the single largest party.

Following the results on Tuesday, PM Modi told a gathering at the party headquarters that the people of India had "placed their faith" in the NDA again.

"I bow to the people for this affection and assure them we will continue the good work done in the last decade to keep fulfilling aspirations," he was quoted as saying.
