Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his warm wishes to Maldives President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and the people of the archipelago nation on the occasion of Eid-Al-Fitr.

He emphasized the significance of the festival in promoting values of compassion, brotherhood, and togetherness essential for fostering a peaceful and inclusive world.

"In his message, Prime Minister Modi also highlighted the cultural and civilisational linkages shared by India and Maldives that go back in time," the Indian High Commission stated in a post.

The India-Maldives ties have historical and cultural roots, with Prime Minister Modi underlining their deep-seated connections. However, recent developments have strained relations, particularly concerning military personnel stationed in the Maldives. Despite these challenges, the Maldives remains a crucial maritime neighbor for India in the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).

The Maldives plays a pivotal role in India's strategic initiatives such as 'SAGAR' (Security and Growth for All in the Region) and the 'Neighbourhood First Policy.' Prime Minister Modi's Eid greetings to President Muizzu reaffirm India's commitment to nurturing bilateral relations and fostering goodwill between the two nations.
