Chennai: The Tamil Nadu unit of banned Popular Front of India (PFI) Mohammed Shaik Ansari said that the organisation would fight the ban legally, IANS reported.

On Wednesday, Ansari said the same in a statement after the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) banned PFI along with seven other associate organisations in the morning. It was issued for five years under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.

Ansari's statement read, "It has been pronounced that the Popular Front of India has been banned in India. This illegal and undemocratic ban will be challenged by us."

He said that for now, his organisation would stop all its activities inside Tamil Nadu.

Meanwhile, Thol Thirumavalavan of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) released a similar statement protesting the ban of PFI. The leader of the Dalit political organisation said that BJP's ideological arm RSS should also be banned.

Further, in Coimbatore's Ukkadam, several women activists and supporters of PFI and SDPI staged protests against the ban.

During the nationwide raids by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), 11 PFI members were arrested from the Tamil state on September 22. The arrestees include PFI national executive member A.M. Ismail, Cuddalore district secretary Fayaz Ahamad, and Dindigul area secretary Yassar Arafat.
