Palestinian embassy thanks India for $2.5 million UNRWA aid for Gaza relief

The Palestinian embassy in New Delhi has expressed gratitude towards the Indian government for its contribution of $2.5 million to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). This funding is part of India’s annual pledge of $5 million for the 2024–25 period.
The contribution comes at a critical juncture, with the UNRWA facing heightened challenges following Israel’s legislative measures banning the agency’s activities within its territories. The Israeli parliament recently passed two bills effectively prohibiting the relief agency, which plays a vital role in supporting Palestinian refugees.
These developments are compounded by yearlong Israeli strikes on Gaza, officially reported to have caused over 44,000 deaths, including many children, with international observers likening the situation to genocide.
In a press release, the Palestinian charge d’affaires in New Delhi acknowledged India’s continued support for UNRWA and underscored the importance of this financial contribution in countering Israeli efforts to dismantle the agency. The statement further highlighted India’s historical ties with Palestine, expressing hope for continued political and material support in achieving Palestinian aspirations for independence and statehood.
The timing of India’s contribution coincides with international calls for a comprehensive ceasefire in Gaza. During the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, world leaders called for adherence to UN Security Council Resolution 2735, emphasizing the need for safe return pathways for displaced citizens and the removal of barriers to humanitarian aid delivery.
On the same day, a report by The Guardian indicated that Norway intends to seek an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice, condemning Israel’s decision to cease cooperation with UNRWA. This initiative adds to growing international scrutiny of Israel’s actions in the region.
India’s recent abstention from voting on a United Nations General Assembly resolution calling for an end to Israel’s occupation of Gaza and the West Bank within a year has drawn attention to its diplomatic stance. However, the financial support to UNRWA reflects its continued commitment to the humanitarian needs of the Palestinian people.
