text_fieldsThe Indian government has disclosed that only 19 Indian nationals are still serving in the Russian armed forces, following efforts to secure the discharge and repatriation of most others.
Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh provided the update in a written response to a Lok Sabha query on Friday.
The query sought details about the number of Indians recruited into the Russian military who have not yet returned home, the reasons for delays in their release despite Russian assurances, and whether they are serving on the front lines. It also inquired about contact with these individuals and measures taken for their repatriation.
Singh stated, "As a result of concerted efforts by the government, most of the Indian nationals in the Russian armed forces have been discharged, and several have been repatriated to India."
He further clarified that "currently, only 19 Indian nationals remain in the Russian armed forces." The government has requested updates from Russian authorities regarding the remaining individuals, emphasizing the need to ensure their safety, well-being, and early discharge.
Efforts to address the situation continue, with the government maintaining contact with Russian officials to expedite the return of these Indian nationals.
