One killed, three feared dead in fire at Bengaluru market area
text_fieldsBengaluru: One person was charred to death and three others are feared dead after a fire broke out in Nagarthpet, near the busy K.R. Market in Bengaluru, on Saturday.
Police said the blaze erupted in a house on the fourth floor of a commercial building, quickly engulfing the entire residence. The exact cause is yet to be confirmed, though preliminary inquiries suggest it started in a plastic mat shop before spreading across the floor.
The deceased has been identified as Madan Singh, a native of Rajasthan. His wife and two children, aged 8 and 5, are also feared trapped.
Eighteen fire tenders were deployed to douse the flames, but narrow lanes in the congested market area hampered rescue efforts. Three ambulances were also rushed to the site.
Rescue operations were ongoing at the time of reporting. Former MLA and local Congress leader R.V. Devaraju said one fatality had been confirmed and three others were feared dead. An official statement from police is awaited.
The incident comes a day after a boy was killed and nine others injured in an explosion in Bengaluru, suspected to have been caused by a gas cylinder blast. In October 2023, a major fire at a cracker shop in Attibele on the city’s outskirts claimed at least 13 lives.
