Omar Abdullah expresses concern over article 370 scrapping in J&K election

National Conference leader Omar Abdullah has voiced his apprehension regarding the scrapping of Article 370, stating that it poses an existential threat to the people of Jammu and Kashmir.

Speaking to NDTV after voting in Srinagar during the fourth phase of the 2024 Lok Sabha election, Abdullah highlighted the challenges faced by the region following the removal of Article 370 in 2019.

Abdullah, contesting from J&K's Baramulla seat, emphasized the significance of the election in the wake of the constitutional changes, stating, "This is an election after we lost our constitutional safeguards... we (now) face a threat to our very existence because the removal of Article 370 removed protections (regarding) our identity, land, and jobs."

The revocation of Article 370, which provided constitutional safeguards to J&K natives, including restrictions on jobs and land sales, was argued by the government to facilitate development in the region.

Expressing concerns over the weakening of domicile laws in J&K compared to other regions, Abdullah stressed the need for restoring land and job protection when the region is reinstated to full statehood.

Regarding the Supreme Court's decision upholding the scrapping of Article 370, Abdullah remarked that it is not final and binding forever. He also highlighted the support received from opposition parties like the Congress-led INDIA bloc, stating that they endorse the NC's stance on Article 370.

In the context of the ongoing election, Abdullah acknowledged the challenges posed by his opponents and expressed hope for a favorable outcome. Referring to the BJP's campaign, he noted a sense of nervousness and speculated on the potential election results.

This election marks a significant event in J&K's political landscape following the Supreme Court's ruling on Article 370, which also directed the conduct of Assembly elections by September this year.
