'Notebandi' devastated economy, 'votebandi' destroying polity: Congress targets PM Modi

The Congress on Sunday criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi over demonetisation, saying "Notebandi" devastated the economy while "votebandi" was destroying the country's polity.
Congress general secretary in-charge of communications Jairam Ramesh made the remarks in a post on X, sharing a screenshot of a media report that described demonetisation as a disaster in 2016 and a resounding failure 10 years later.
"Notebandi devastated the economy. Votebandi is destroying the polity. Both are the contributions of the PM," Ramesh said.
On November 8, 2016, PM Modi had addressed the nation and announced the demonetisation of high-value currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000.
The Congress has consistently criticised the decision on its anniversaries, claiming it severely damaged the Indian economy.
The opposition party has previously called demonetisation a "monumental blunder" and accused the government of failing to achieve its stated objectives.
