Lucknow: The Lakhimpur Kheri police in Uttar Pradesh produced a warrant against Alt News co-founder Mohammad Zubair just a few hours after the Supreme Court granted him a five-day interim bail in a case registered in UP's Sitapur for allegedly offending religious sentiments through a tweet. Last year, a case was registered against him at Mohammadi police station for inciting enmity between two groups.

Zubair was summoned to the Lakhimpur Kheri court to appear before it on July 11.

As per a court directive, the Lakhimpur Kheri case was in September last year. The Lakhimpur Kheri police approached a local court on Friday, got a warrant against Zubair and served it at the Sitapur district jail where Zubair is lodged.

Sanjeev Suman, the Superintendent of Police, Lakhimpur Kheri said that it was the responsibility of the jail officials to produce Zubair in court while saying, "The Lakhimpur Kheri court has summoned Zubair in court on July 11".

A case has been registered by Ashish Kumar Katiyar on the charge that Zubair spread false news on Twitter to disturb communal harmony, the police said. Zubair was accordingly booked under Section 153-A (inciting enmity between two groups) of the Indian Penal Code.

Zubair was brought to Sitapur from Delhi two days ago, where he was imprisoned in connection with a separate case filed last week. The Delhi Police produced Zubair before a local court in Sitapur and remanded him in six-day police custody in the Sitapur case, the IE reported.

Sitapur jail superintendent Suresh Singh said that Sitapur police on Friday morning took Zubair's custody. "Few hours later, Sitapur police brought Zubair back to jail. Following court directive, Zubair has been granted bail in Sitapur case. Now, two warrants – one each of Delhi and Lakhimpur Kheri—are pending against Zubair," the superintendent said.

The superintendent added that they have not yet decided where Zubair is to be sent and that a decision would be taken soon. "Zubair has not been granted bail in the case lodged against him in Delhi and Lakhimpur Kheri," he said.
