Nearly 77 rape cases reported on an average countrywide in 2020: NCRB

The latest National Crime Records Bureau data issued on Wednesday has shown that, on average, nearly 77 rape cases were reported every day in 2020. Altogether, 28,046 incidents of rape were reported in 2020.

3,71,503 cases of crimes against women were reported across the country. This is lesser than 2019, when 4,05,326 were reported and 2018, when 3,78,236 cases were reported. 1,11,549 of the crimes against women were under the cruelty by husband or relatives category and 62,300 of kidnapping and abduction.

Of the total crimes against women last year, 28,046 cases were of rape. These cases involved 28,153 victims. Of this, 25,298 were adults, and 2,655 were below 18 years of age. The number of rape cases, as defined in the Indian Penal Code section 376, stood at 32,033 in 2019, 33,356 in 2018 and 32,559 in 2017.

The maximum cases were reported in Rajasthan (5,310), followed by Uttar Pradesh (2,769), Madhya Pradesh(2,339), Maharashtra (2,061) and Assam(1,657). Meanwhile, 997 cases were logged in Delhi.

Besides rape, 85,392 cases of assault to outrage modesty and 3,741 cases of attempt to commit rape were also reported. Furthermore, 105 cases of acid attacks were also logged across the country in 2020. 6,966 cases of dowry deaths with 7,045 victims were recorded last year.

The NCRB, under the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, is responsible for collecting and analysing crime data.
