Fahmida Hasan Khan, a member of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) has reached out to Union Home Minister Amit Shah, seeking permission to read the Hanuman Chalisa and Namaz outside Prime Minister Narendra Modi's residence.

She wrote that she wants to read the Namaz, Hanuman Chalisa, Durga Chalisa, Namokar Mantra, and more outside PM Modi's official residence. Ms Khan added that she recites the Hanuman Chalisa and does Durga Puja at her home, reported NDTV.

The letter is a reprisal for the actions of an MP-MLA couple in Maharashtra who threatened to recite Hanuman Chalisa outside CM Uddhav Thackeray's house.

Ms Khan took a dig at the ruling party saying: "the way inflation and unemployment are increasing in the country, it has become necessary to wake up the Prime Minister." She added if Ravi Rana and Navneet Rana can recite Hanuman Chalisa outside Matoshree, we should be allowed to recite Namaz, Hanuman Chalisa, and Durga Chalisa outside the PM's residence.

She told NDTV that if the Ranas want to awaken Thackeray's Hindutva, the Jain religion of our Home Minister and Prime Minister should also be awakened. Ms Khan clarified that she wants to hold an all-inclusive prayer.

The NCP leader clarified that her letter was meant to counter the distraction from real and important issues. She added that the stunts are done by the central government to divert the attention of the people.

"It can't go on like this. No one is talking about the real issues. Prices are increasing, unemployment is rising, and GDP growth is slowing."

In Maharashtra, the Ranas were arrested and sent to 14-day judicial custody over the Hanuman Chalisa row. 13 Shiv Sena workers were also booked for protesting outside the residence of the Ranas. The party workers are now released on bail.
