text_fieldsLucknow: Altaf, a 22-year-old man, died in a police station in Uttar Pradesh's Etah district, 270 km west of state capital Lucknow. The police alleged that he died by suicide. Five policemen were suspended for "negligence".
The victim was brought to the police station on Tuesday morning for questioning in a case linked to the "kidnapping of a woman and forced marriage," reported NDTV.
Etah's Police Chief Rohan Pramod Bothre released a video statement on Twitter. He said that Altaf "asked for the toilet" and did not return for a few minutes. The cops went to look for him and found him dead. The unconscious man was taken to the hospital but died within 5-10 minutes.
According to the Police Chief, Altaf was wearing a black jacket. It appears that he hooked the string attached to the hood of the jacket to a tap in the washroom and strangled himself. Chand Miyan, Altaf's father said that he suspects that the police are involved in the hanging, reported NDTV.
