Mumbai: Mumbai police on Monday nabbed a man for issuing threats to Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) chairman Mukesh Ambani and his family, officials have said.

The man, identified as Afzal, had made three-four threat calls on a landline number at the Reliance Foundation Hospital in Mumbai's Girgaon this morning, officials said.

The suspect was traced after the police identified the phone number from which he had made the calls.

A preliminary investigation suggests the caller is mentally unstable, news agency PTI quoted an official as saying.

A case has been registered and the man is currently being questioned by the police.

Last month, the Supreme Court ruled that Mukesh Ambani and his family in Mumbai can continue to have security provided by the central government, dismissing a petition challenging the provision.

The centre had approached the Supreme Court after the Tripura High Court had accepted a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) against the government security cover to the Ambanis.

Ambani and his family were given security cover by the Maharashtra government based on an evaluation of threat perception by the centre.

Last year, an abandoned car was found with explosives near Mr Ambani's home, unravelling a major conspiracy that involved former policemen.

A handwritten letter was also found in the car, reportedly addressed to Mukesh Ambani and Nita Ambani, officials had said then.
