Mumbai man who married twin sisters face probe after viral video

New Delhi: A man in Maharashtra is charged with bigamy after he married twin sisters in a grand ceremony.
A footage showed Atul Uttam Autade, who runs a travel agency in Mumbai, being garlanded by two women in wedding costumes.
Twin sisters Rinki and Pinki Padgaonkar ceremonially put garland on Atul at Solapur in Maharashtra, while relatives looked on.
Hoisted on the shoulders of the friends, Atul playfully dodges garlands but two women one after the other successfully garland him.
Afterwards they laughed in merriment, which didn't last long with the police taking note of the incident.
If convicted of bigamy, Atul will get a seven-year jail sentence.
They were performing the traditional "varmala" or garland ceremony when the video was filmed.
"A non-cognisable offence case under IPC section 494 (marrying again when spouse is alive) was registered against Atul Awtade for marrying twin sisters together on December 2," senior police officer Shirish Sardeshpande reportedly said.
The National Women's Commission and the Maharashtra women's body have stepped seeking action against the trio, according to the report.
Atul and twin sisters know each other since childhood, and he used to take their mother to hospital thus allegedly getting close to both, the report said.
Somebody close to the family is quoted as saying that after the girls' father died they lived with their mother. Atul who was in relation with the sisters offered to marry them.
Twin sisters, who are IT engineers, agreed to marry him and the wedding photos showed them flanking by Atul, all smiles.
Reports say that their families didn't object to the marriage.
