Mumbai: A 31-year-old officer at Mumbai’s Mazagaon dockyard has been arrested on charges of espionage following an investigation by the Maharashtra Anti-Terror Squad (ATS), NDTV reported.

Kalpesh Baikar, who is working as a structural fabricator at the dockyard, is accused of leaking sensitive information to a Pakistan-based intelligence operative.

Officers have reportedly said that Kalpesh Baikar was blackmailed into disclosing sensitive information after having been honeytrapped.

The officer was in touch with a woman agent from Pakistan for months after she befriended him on the social media and Baikar allegedly got money in exchange for the information.

The ATS stated that they received inputs about an Indian suspect having leaked sensitive information to a Pakistan-based intelligence operative.

‘Accused was interrogated by the Anti-Terrorism Squad. During the investigation, it was found that the suspect was introduced to a Pakistan based intelligence operative (PIO) through Facebook and WhatsApp between November 2021 and May 2023. The suspect chatted with PIO on Facebook, WhatsApp account and was arrested by Indian government,’ the statement reportedly said.

Arrested under the Official Secrets Act, Baiker is being questioned by ATS; however, officers have not revealed the details of the information that the officer allegedly leaked to the Pakistan agent.
