Senior Advocate Mukul Rohatgi will take up the constitutional post of Attorney General for India. He stepped down from the post in June 2017.

The current A-G KK Venugopal had told the government that he did not want to remain in the office anymore, reported The Indian Express. He succeeded Rohatgi and served a three-year tenure which ended in 2020. The 91-year-old then cited his age as a reason for not wanting to continue. The Centre requested that he stay for another term. Venugopal agreed and restricted extending his term by a year.

His tenure will end on September 30 and Rohatgi will return to the top office.

67-year-old Rohatgi was consulted on sensitive legal issues like scrapping of the Article 370 before his tenure ended in 2017. He also served as Additional Solicitor General of India in the past.

He was appointed as the government's top lawyer in 2014 and has won several crucial cases. He represented the Gujarat government in the 2002 riot case. He also argued the case related to the National Judicial Appointment Commission and led the defence team of Aryan Khan in the drugs-on-cruise case.
