Gandhinagar: Congress leader and MP Rahul Gandhi today gave his final statement on the controversial 'Modi surname' defamation case in the Surat magisterial court.
Rahul arrived at the Surat court on Thursday morning to record his further statement in a defamation case filed against him by the BJP MLA from Surat West, Purnesh Modi in April 2019 under IPC sections 499 and 500.
Rahul Gandhi is defended by the advocate Kirit Panwala.
In 2019, Modi had alleged that Rahul Gandhi had defamed the entire Modi community by saying, "How come all the thieves have Modi as the common surname?" while addressing a poll rally in Karnataka in 2019.
A week ago, Chief Judicial Magistrate of Surat A.N. Dave had directed Rahul Gandhi to remain present on June 24 to record his final statement in the case.
There are two more defamation cases currently existing against Rahul Gandhi, one was for calling Home Minister Amit Shah a "murder accused" and another for alleging that the Ahmedabad District Cooperative Bank, of which the BJP chief Amit Shah as one of its directors and a past chairman, was involved in a scam during demonetisation.
Rahul Gandhi is likely to appear before Ahmedabad court on Friday in a District Cooperative Bank case.
