Ranchi: In the Modi surname case, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi sought fifteen days’ time to appear in the special MP-MLA court in Ranchi.

The case was filed by Pradip Modi, a resident of Ranchi, in which he claimed that during campaigning for the 2019 Lok Sabha election, Gandhi had made a remark about people with the Modi surname. His remark has hurt the sentiments of the Modi community and it is a case of defamation.

Gandhi had reportedly said that "Why do all thieves have the Modi surname". After the Surat court convicted him in the criminal defamation case, he was disqualified from Parliament.

The court had issued notice to Gandhi to appear in person in the court on Friday.

However, his advocate Pradeep Chandra sought a 15-day time, and according to him, the order for Gandhi to appear in person in the court had been challenged in the High Court.

During a hearing on May 23, a three-week time was granted to Gandhi on his advocate’s request.

Earlier, Gandhi's plea seeking exemption from appearing in person was rejected by the special MP-MLA court.
