Three Muslim men were allegedly killed in a mob attack in Assam’s Nagaon district in the early hours of Monday after they were suspected of involvement in a dacoity, according to police.
The deceased were identified as Saifullah, Ajibur alias Khairul, and Enamul Haque, while a fourth person who was also assaulted by the mob remains in critical condition and is receiving treatment at a hospital.
Nagaon Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime), Abotani Doley stated that the incident occurred around 2 a.m. in No. 1 Kathpara village under Rupahihat Police Station in the Kaliabor co-district, Maktoob Media reported.
Police indicated that a group of around 10–12 armed individuals allegedly entered a house in the village, restrained the occupants, and held a six-year-old girl at knifepoint while looting cash and jewellery.
Doley said that as the group attempted to escape, the family raised an alarm, which led nearby residents to gather and pursue the suspects. He added that four individuals were eventually caught by the villagers and were severely beaten before the police arrived.
According to the police, two of the suspects died on the spot, while another later succumbed to injuries at a hospital. The fourth individual continues to be in critical condition.
Kaliabor Co-District Superintendent of Police Bitul Chetia has reached the scene, and an investigation into the incident is underway. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether any arrests have been made in connection with the mob attack.
