Mizoram Tourism Minister Robert Romawia Royte said the state will see a boost in eco-tourism. The government has taken steps to promote eco-tourism to conserve the environment and boost sustainability.

The northeastern state is known for being rich in flora and fauna. Tourists often choose the region for forest treks and the ideal climate.

"The crippling effect on the tourism industry induced by the pandemic is gradually wearing off. The state is currently focusing on post-Covid strategy and plan for revival of tourism in the state," said the minister.

Royte was speaking at a Round Table Discussion at Aijal Club when he said about 28% of the bamboo resources of the country are available in the northeastern region. "Out of the total forest area of the region, about 12.8% is bamboo, and two-thirds of the growing stock is located in the northeastern states".

MNF legislator F. Lalnunmawia spoke of a pilot project on a bamboo link road, which will be the first of its kind in India. It will connect the bamboo potential areas in Mizoram with all-weather roads.

The new initiative will unlock the potential of the unexplored eco-tourism in not only Mizoram but the northeast region. He emphasised the need to promote responsible tourism and travel. The Mizoram tourism department had formed a policy - the Responsible Tourism Policy, 2020 - to ensure that environment is preserved and not put at risk.

Mizoram Chief Secretary Renu Sharma said that eco-tourism is being promoted in the state as a means to add value to nature. "It is a form of tourism which fosters environmental principles with emphasis on visiting and observing natural areas relatively undisturbed by human activities".

Royte added that the government prepared a comprehensive recovery plan to rebuild Destination Mizoram focusing on responsible and sustainable standards. The Mizoram cabinet is hoping the state to be a favourite destination for both domestic and international travellers.

The tourism minister noted after the Centre unveiled its Act East Policy, the world's perspective of India began changing. "The Centre is undertaking several mega projects to enhance inter-connectivity with the northeast".
