New Delhi: Delhi Public Works Department (PWD) Minister Parvesh Verma on Thursday announced a probe into the non-installation of CCTV cameras in eight constituencies represented by BJP MLAs during the previous AAP government. Addressing the Delhi Assembly, Verma assured that CCTV cameras would be installed on a priority basis in these areas.
During the last Assembly, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) held 62 seats, while the BJP had eight. Raising the issue in the House, Vishwas Nagar MLA OP Sharma of the BJP alleged that not a single CCTV camera had been installed in his constituency under the previous AAP-led administration. He demanded an inquiry by the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) into the matter.
Other BJP MLAs who were in the opposition during the previous term also voiced similar concerns, accusing the AAP government of "stepmotherly" treatment. Laxmi Nagar MLA Abhay Verma stated that BJP MLAs had even approached the high court regarding the issue. Despite a court order and a recommendation from the chief secretary, no action was taken, he claimed.
Delhi Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta noted that while 2,000 CCTV cameras were supposed to be installed in each of the 70 constituencies, the eight represented by BJP MLAs were left out. The previous AAP government had purchased 1.40 lakh cameras for installation across the city, but these constituencies remained uncovered.
Responding to the allegations, PWD Minister Parvesh Verma assured the House that the matter would be thoroughly investigated. He emphasized that any officers found responsible would face action, and installations would be completed in all eight BJP-represented constituencies.
