Men should not be tailors and hairdressers for women, says UP Women’s Commission member
text_fieldsIn a bid to protect women from inappropriate behavior, a member of the Uttar Pradesh State Women’s Commission has proposed that men should not be permitted to tailor women’s clothes or cut their hair.
Himani Agarwal, a commission member, stated that men in such professions could pose risks of "bad touch" and harassment, citing this as the motivation behind the proposal.
The suggestion was raised during a women’s commission meeting on October 28, chaired by the state commission head, Babita Chauhan, and gained support from other members present. Among the proposals, the commission suggested that only female tailors should take measurements for women’s garments and that salons should employ only female hairdressers for female clients.
Additionally, the proposal calls for CCTV cameras to be installed in tailoring shops to ensure a safer environment.
“We believe that certain men in these roles may engage in unwanted behavior or have ill intentions, though we acknowledge that not all men behave inappropriately,” Agarwal told PTI. She added that, while the proposal is still under review, the commission plans to approach the state government to push for legal measures on this issue.
