Marathas can avail EWS quota: Maharashtra Government
text_fieldsMumbai: After the Supreme Court scrapped separate reservation for the Maratha community, the Maharashtra General Administration Department on Monday issued a government order stating that the Maratha community can avail of the 10 per cent EWS quota. EWS quota was implemented two years ago for the poor in the general category, much to popular protests.
On May 5, the Supreme Court struck down on the state law that granted separate reservation for the community, which has been classified as Socially and Economically Backward Class (SEBC), in education and employment. The EWS quota would be applicable for the community from September 9, 2020, when the court imposed a stay on the Maratha reservation, to the final verdict this year on May 5.
The EWS quota would be applicable for SEBC candidates whose appointments were pending before the stay. It will not be applicable for those who benefited from the SEBC quota, it added.
The Shiv Sena led-government also extended the tenure of the Justice Dilip Bhosale Committee set up to study the SC's May 5 verdict till June 7 from the earlier ascertained May 31.
