Representational.

Badohi/UP: An allegedly drunken man vandalised a Mahatma Gandhi statue placed at a city roundabout here in Uttar Pradesh. Police informed that the man identified as Subhash Chauhan of the Chauri area broke the statue at the Indra Mill roundabout and fled, PTI reported.

Congress workers staged a protest against the incident.

District Magistrate Aryaka Akhouri informed that the man broke the statue made of marble by shaking it with extreme force and toppling it down. He came on a bike but left the scene on foot. He is suspected to be intoxicated, the magistrate said. He added that a new statue would be installed shortly.

Eyewitnesses told PTI that the man's act gathered hundreds of people to the scene, including a few police officers. They said he created a commotion for an hour before vandalising the statue.

After hearing about the incident, Congress party activists reached the scene and protested. Later the district administration deployed heavy police protection in the area to restore peace.

Congress's district president Rajendra Kumar Dubey called for the arrest of the man who destroyed the statue.
