Mumbai: A man posing as a naval officer has fled with a junior sailor’s rifle and ammunition from a naval residential area in south Mumbai, officials said on Monday.

The incident occurred on Saturday night when a junior sailor on sentry duty was approached by a man in a naval uniform who claimed he had come to relieve the sailor. Trusting him, the sailor handed over his rifle and ammunition. After some time, the man, who had assumed the sentry post in the sailor’s place, was found missing along with the weapon and ammunition.

The Indian Navy, in coordination with the Mumbai Police, has launched an extensive search operation to recover the stolen items.

A case has been registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita against the unidentified individual at Cuffe Parade Police Station, an official said.

Additionally, a Board of Inquiry has been ordered to probe the circumstances leading to the incident. The case is also under investigation by other government agencies, with the Indian Navy extending all necessary assistance, the official added.
