PM's absence sparks Kharge's demand for Modi's participation: 'he is no god', in Manipur debate
text_fieldsNew Delhi: In a dramatic turn of events in the Rajya Sabha, Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge passionately demanded a discussion under Rule 167 regarding the recent violence in Manipur. He called for Prime Minister Narendra Modi's participation in the debate, triggering both support and opposition.
Kharge revealed that a compromise had been reached between the Opposition and the Government, settling on a discussion under Rule 167, which pertains to "matters of public interest." This followed a series of negotiations, including a proposal to employ Rule 176, which the Opposition rejected due to a lack of consensus.
However, tensions escalated when Kharge’s call for the Prime Minister’s participation drew protests from the Treasury Benches. Kharge emphasized, “He is no God; he's a public servant like all of us. Let a discussion happen under Rule 167; we'll present our concerns.”
The session took an unexpected turn as the House was adjourned amidst heightened emotions.
Prime Minister Modi was set to address the Lok Sabha on a no-confidence motion against his government. Congress expressed resilience, with leader K C Venugopal stating, "We are prepared to face whatever the Prime Minister chooses to address."
The Parliament's atmosphere remains charged as discussions on the Manipur violence and the no-confidence motion unfold, showcasing the political fervour that continues to shape India's legislative landscape.
