Less than 10% women in 7 states sought help to escape physical violence: NFHS

As per the latest National Family Health Survey (NFHS), over 70 per cent of women in 11 states and one union territory never sought help or told anyone of the violence they experienced.

The proportion of these women is over 80 per cent in Assam, Bihar, Manipur, Sikkim and Jammu and Kashmir. In Tripura, Telangana, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Goa, Gujarat and Andhra Pradesh, this is over 70 cent.

In Assam, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Goa, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Manipur, and Nagaland, less than ten per cent of women sought help to escape physical violence.

Though who sought help sought it from their own family, husband's family, neighbour, police, lawyer and religious leader.

Spousal violence experienced by women include cuts, bruises, aches, eye injuries, broken bones, severe burns, broken teeth, sprains and dislocations, among others.
