Kolkata’s iconic yellow taxis face extinction by March 2025 amid pollution norms

Over 64% of Kolkata’s legendary yellow taxis will be phased out by March 2025, following the 15-year service limit imposed by the state transport department.

Currently, around 7,000 yellow taxis are registered in West Bengal, but approximately 4,500 of these vehicles, all over 15 years old, will be taken off the roads due to pollution regulations.

The iconic yellow taxis, primarily Ambassador models, were manufactured by Hindustan Motors Limited (HML) at its Hind Motor plant in Hooghly district. However, with the cessation of Ambassador production, replacements are no longer an option.

While records differ on when Kolkata's yellow taxis first appeared, some suggest 1908 as the debut year, with fares set at 50 paise per mile. The Calcutta Taxi Association officially adopted the Ambassador as the standard model in 1962, with yellow chosen for its high visibility, even after sunset.

In recent years, the dominance of app-based cab services has significantly impacted the popularity of yellow taxis, as commuters prefer the added comfort and convenience. Despite this, the yellow taxis hold deep nostalgic value, prompting the state transport department to explore ways to preserve their legacy.

“We cannot bring Ambassador models back since production has ceased. However, taxi owners with permits for the old yellow taxis can apply for new commercial transport permits. If they wish to retain yellow as the vehicle’s color, they can do so with special permission from the state transport department,” said a department official.

These proposals are still in the planning phase and require further discussions with taxi associations.
