Kolkata: Complaint filed against YouTuber Sayak Chakraborty over beef row
text_fieldsKolkata: YouTuber Sayak Chakraborty, who alleged that he was served beef instead of goat meat at a restaurant in Kolkata’s Park Street area, is now facing legal trouble.
On Saturday night, a man named Joyraj Bhattacharjee filed a formal complaint against Chakraborty at Park Street Police Station, police said on Sunday. According to the complaint, Chakraborty is accused of attempting to incite a riot by hatching a conspiracy. Bhattacharjee shared the information on social media, clarifying, “I filed a complaint against a certain influencer at the police station, not on Facebook.”
The controversy began on Friday night when Sayak lodged a complaint at Park Street Police Station after allegedly being served beef instead of the goat meat he had ordered at Olypub, a popular bar-cum-restaurant. Sayak, who had visited the restaurant with two friends, had ordered one plate of mutton steak, but claimed he was served beef instead.
Based on his complaint, Kolkata Police arrested Sheikh Nasiruddin, a restaurant employee, under Section 299 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (deliberately hurting the religious feelings of any class by insulting their religion or religious beliefs). The accused did not get bail when produced in court.
Following the incident, Sayak shared a video on social media showing his altercation with the waiter and manager of the restaurant. The video went viral, with Sayak narrating that he and his friends had ordered mutton but were served beef.
While many on social media called the incident unfortunate, some questioned Sayak’s actions. One of the friends who was present with Sayak clarified on social media that while he had spoken about being served a different dish, he did not make any religious provocation.
The incident has continued to generate debate online, highlighting sensitivities around food, religion, and social media influence.
