Kejriwal orders judicial probe into the alleged rape, murder of 9-year-old
text_fieldsNew Delhi: Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal In Wednesday has ordered for a a judge-led inquiry into the alleged rape and murder of a nine-year-old dalit girl at a crematorium near Delhi cantonment.
The police had arrested four men, crematorium workers, in connection with the crime are charged with murder, rape, and criminal intimidation.The attackers had cremated the girl's body against the family's wishes.
Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal tweeted that top lawyers will be engaged to get the culprits punished. "Central government should take strict steps to improve law and order in Delhi. We will cooperate fully," he added.
Meanwhile, the public has been protesting for four days since the incident. The gruesome details of the case have sparked nationwide angst over the sexual violence against women.
The Centre's silence on the issue is also being widely criticised. Opposition leaders have demanded action from Home Minister Amit Shah. But no ruling party member has made a statement of concern or regret about the incident, reported The Guardian.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi met the girl's family on Wednesday. BSP leader Mayawati demanded justice for the victim.
Meanwhile, the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights has asked the police to submit a report within 48 hours. The Delhi Commission for Women also reached out to the police department asking for a plan of action.
The police said that the girl was out to fetch water from a crematorium near her house in the city's Cantonment area on Sunday.The girl's mother said that when she discovered the body, the four men claimed that the child was accidentally electrocuted near the water tap. They also told her not to report the death and tried to fool her by saying that doctors steal organs during autopsy.
The accused also suggested immediate cremation to which the mother agreed. She said that the men even got the red cloth to wrap the child.About 200 villagers heard the mother's cries and extinguished the pyre after she shared suspicion about the girl being raped.
