Karnataka police and authorities have removed roadside signage with Mahatma Gandhi's assassin Nathuram Godse's name from the Bola gram panchayat of Karkala taluk in the Udupi district.

The incident came to the officials' attention after a photograph of the new sign went viral on social media. Local Youth Congress activists tweeted the image and said they will launch a protest for the removal of the sign.

The sign had the words "Padugiri Nathuram Godse Road".

Gram Panchayat officials said no such decision was taken by them and expressed surprise over the sign. The local authorities doubt the people behind it meant to create a controversy. They added that they approached the police and higher authorities with a complaint.

Bola gram panchayat Vice President S. Kiran Kumar said some miscreants installed the sign to create a controversy. "The gram panchayat has not taken any decision to name that newly asphalted road after Godse". Panchayat Development Officer Rajendra approached the Karkala Rural Police regarding the matter.

The taluk is the home constituency of Energy and Kannada and Culture Minister V. Sunil Kumar.
