Karnataka girl appeals Bommai to allow hijab wearers into exams

Bengaluru: On the hijab ban in the state of Karnataka, a 17-year-old girl who is alive in the protest against the ban appealed the Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai, saying that he still had a chance to stop Muslim girls' future from ruining, NDTV reported.

The girl, Alia Assadi, said that ban on headscarves would affect many students who are about to appear for the Pre-University exams this month.

The CM should take the decision and allow them to write exams wearing hijab, she said, adding that they are the future of this country, Assadi tweeted, tagging the CM.

Assadi is one of the petitioners who challenged the hijab ban. After the Karnataka High Court upheld the state government imposed the ban, the petitioners approached the Supreme Court.

It was on March 15 that the Karnataka HC dismissed the petitions that challenged the state government's ban on the headwear. It had reasoned that the hijab is not an essential practice of Islam, while students should follow the uniforms prescribed by educational institutions. Further, the Supreme Court had refused an urgent hearing into pleas challenging the HC verdict.
