Kanpur CMO bans eye camps after 8 loose eyesight

Kanpur: Days after eight people from Kanpur lost their sight, Chief Medical Officer (CMO) here banned public and private hospitals from conducting eye check-up camps, IANS reported.

The ban will stay until further orders.

A notice has been issued communicating the order to the hospitals in the district, while an advisory has also been issued asking people to remain cautious in the context of medical procedures.

The order mandates that no camps on eye-related eye issues should be held anywhere in the district until authorities complete the investigation into the incident where eight patients lost their eyesight following a cataract operation performed by the doctors of city-based Aradhya Hospital.

In addition, the organisers of eye camps will have to obtain permission from the additional CMO in future.

Further, the CMO has decided to send a letter to National Medical Commission (NMC) recommending the cancellation of the degrees of Dr Neeraj Gupta, the ophthalmologist who performed the surgeries at Aradhya Hospital, a private facility.

Dr Gupta has been served a notice and asked to reply to it within three days.

Finally, the state government sought a detailed report on the people losing sight of the district administration.
