New Delhi: Justice K Vinod Chandran took the oath of office as a judge of the Supreme Court on January 16, administered by Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna. The Centre cleared the appointment on January 13, following the recommendation of the Supreme Court Collegium. Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Law and Justice, Arjun Ram Meghwal, announced the appointment on social media, stating that after consultation with the Chief Justice of India, the Presidentappointed Justice Chandran as a Supreme Court judge.

Justice Chandran was the Chief Justice of the Patna High Court before his elevation. His name was recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium, which noted that there was no representation from the Kerala High Court on the Supreme Court Bench. The Collegium emphasized Justice Chandran’s extensive experience, having served as a judge of the Kerala High Court since November 2011 and as Chief Justice of the Patna High Court from March 29, 2023. In total, Justice Chandran has over 12 years of experience in various legal fields, including serving as a judge and chief justice in high courts.

Born on April 25, 1963, Justice Chandran ranks 13th in the combined all-India seniority of High Court judges. He obtained his law degree from the Kerala Law Academy Law College in Thiruvananthapuram and started his legal practice in 1991. Before his judicial career, he served as the Special Government Pleader (Taxes) for the Kerala government from 2007 to 2011.

The appointment of Justice K Vinod Chandran as a Supreme Court judge marks a significant moment, reflecting his remarkable career and the government's commitment to enhancing diversity and representation in the Apex Court.
