Jamia Millia Islamia rises to 334th place in global sustainability rankings

New Delhi: Jamia Millia Islamia has improved its position in the 2026 UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, moving up 42 places to rank 334th globally.
The university stood at 376th in the 2025 rankings. It has also been placed 13th among Indian institutions and 192nd in Asia, according to Saima Saeed, the university’s Chief Public Relations Officer.
The UI GreenMetric rankings, launched by Universitas Indonesia, assess universities on their efforts in areas such as environmental protection, sustainable infrastructure and campus development. The 2026 rankings featured universities from across the world.
JMI Vice-Chancellor Mazhar Asif congratulated the university’s faculty, students, researchers, staff and alumni, crediting their combined efforts for the improved ranking.
He said the recognition reflected the university’s continued focus on academic standards, environmental responsibility and sustainable development.
In a separate development, a delegation from Germany’s University of Applied Sciences Erfurt is visiting JMI’s Department of Civil Engineering under an academic exchange programme.
The delegation, comprising Civil Engineering Department faculty member Christian Stangenberger and seven students, arrived at the university on September 19 under an exchange arrangement covered by a memorandum of understanding between the two institutions.
The visitors were welcomed by Department of Civil Engineering head Professor Quamrul Hassan, faculty members and students.
During discussions, officials noted that the partnership between JMI and the Erfurt university had been active for nearly 20 years and had supported exchanges involving students and faculty members.
The two sides also discussed renewing the agreement and expanding cooperation in joint research and other academic areas.
Welcoming the German delegation, Asif highlighted the longstanding intellectual and cultural links between India and Germany. He referred to the contributions of German scholars, including Max Müller and Immanuel Kant, and to Germany’s engagement with the works of Omar Khayyam.
He also noted that three of JMI’s founders, including a former Vice-Chancellor, had pursued higher education in Germany during the 1920s.
Asif said the partnership with the University of Applied Sciences Erfurt was important to JMI’s plans to strengthen academic collaboration with Germany. He added that the university was exploring the establishment of a Centre for German Studies covering the language, history, culture, art and cinema of Germany.
