Tensions flared in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, during the Lord Jagannath Rath Yatra organized by the Khati Samaj (classified under the Other Backward Classes) on the night of June 27, when individuals in the crowd reportedly hurled slippers, shoes, and cow-dung cakes at the Shahi Masjid located at Chhatri Chowk.

Footage of the incident quickly circulated on social media, prompting widespread condemnation from users across various platforms, who criticized the act as deeply disrespectful.

Following a complaint lodged by local resident Abrar Ahmed, the Kharak Kuan police registered a First Information Report (FIR) against unknown persons under Section 299 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Samhita (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class of citizens by insulting their religion or religious beliefs), Siasat Daily reported.

Although an FIR has been filed, no arrests have been made yet. Police officials indicated that they have yet to identify those involved.

The local station house officer, Rajkumar Malviya, stated that authorities are in the process of reviewing CCTV footage from Chhatri Chowk to trace the culprits and that appropriate action will follow once identification is confirmed.

Law enforcement has assured that the situation in the area remains under control and that the investigation is ongoing.
