Its not the governments job to tell people what to eat, says Minority Affairs Minister

Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, India's minority affairs minister, said that there is no growing intolerance between religious communities, and people have the freedom to practice their faith. His statements come after communal clashes broke out at a procession for Hanuman Jayanti in Delhi.

The minister told The Economic Times that those who are unable to digest the peace and prosperity in the country are trying to defame the inclusive culture and commitment of India.

The clash in Delhi injured several people including six policemen. Similar incidents have been taking place in three other states in the past weeks. Small-scale religious clashes have been taking place over non-vegetarian food being served in hostels during Rama Navami and the existence of loudspeakers in mosques.

Mr. Naqvi declared that it is not the government's job to tell people what to eat. "Every citizen has freedom in the country to eat the food of their choice." In the past few years, extremist Hindutva groups have taken up causes in the name of defending the Hindu religion.

When asked about the controversy over the hijab ban imposed on students and teachers in Karnataka, Mr. Naqvi said that there is no ban on hijab in India. He added that every college has a dress code, discipline, and decorum. The minister said those who cannot accept or like it can choose a different institution, reported Reuters.
