Intelligence officers seize 62 kgs of heroin at Delhi airport
text_fieldsThe Directorate of Revenue Intelligence seized 62 kgs of heroin at the Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport air cargo complex. In an operation code-named Black & White, officers have found drugs worth Rs 434 crore.
The finance ministry said that is one of the biggest such seizures till date.
"Continuing its crackdown on the trafficking in narcotic drugs, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has unearthed yet another novel modus operandi and affected seizure of 62 kg Heroin on May 10 after interdicting an air cargo consignment. This is one of the biggest seizures of Heroin till date through courier/ cargo/ air passenger modes in India," said the ministry.
Officials seized 55 kgs of heroin from an imported cargo consignment declared to contain trolley bags. The consignment had 330 trolley bags and the drugs were found concealed inside the hollow metal tubes of 126 trolley bags.
The package came from Entebbe in Uganda via Dubai. Another 7 kgs of heroin were recovered in two quick operations in Punjab and Haryana. Rs 50 lakh in cash was also found in the second set of operations.
The ministry said the DRI officers have apprehended the importer of the offending consignment. "Other suspects are also being interrogated and further investigations are underway".
Over 60 kgs of heroin have been seized in the past three months from different air passages. In 2021, over 3,300 kg of heroin was seized.
