Instagram posts of Class 9 students create communal tension in UP, Police arrest minors

Bareilly: Tensions flared in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, as a social media exchange between two 14-year-old Class 9 students from different religious backgrounds led to a confrontation and mob unrest.

The incident unfolded when one student, belonging to a minority community, commented on an Instagram post on Thursday. The following day, his classmate retorted with a comment that allegedly hurt the sentiments of the minority community.

The situation quickly escalated, with hundreds from the minority community gathering outside a police station, demanding immediate action against the offending student. The situation took a darker turn as the mob blockaded the student's residence, pelting stones at the building, prompting police intervention.

Despite efforts by senior police and administrative officials to diffuse the situation, the protestors remained unyielding. The standoff persisted through the night, with the situation finally being brought under control when the first student was apprehended around midnight. An hour later, the second student was also taken into custody.

Bareilly, known for its communal sensitivities, has faced similar incidents in the past. Just weeks ago, violent clashes erupted in the Joginiwada area between a Kanwar Yatri group and a minority community. The recent incident has drawn attention to the local police's ability to manage crowds and maintain order.

The police have assured strict actions against those found responsible for inciting the unrest, backed by video evidence and CCTV footage. The incident has once again highlighted the need for better understanding and tolerance among communities. As investigations continue, the town of Bareilly grapples with maintaining peace amid its communal dynamics.
