New Delhi: India has upgraded its Technical Mission in Kabul to a full-fledged embassy, marking a significant step toward reestablishing diplomatic engagement with Afghanistan.
The Ministry of External Affairs confirmed the move on Tuesday, noting that the change takes effect immediately. Officials stated that the decision aligns with understandings reached during the recent visit of Afghanistan’s Foreign Minister to India, TNIE reported.
In its statement, the ministry said that the Technical Mission in Kabul would now operate as the Embassy of India in Afghanistan.
The announcement comes shortly after talks between Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi and India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in New Delhi earlier in the month.
According to diplomatic sources, security arrangements for the Indian mission in Kabul were among the main issues discussed during their meeting.
