Indian defence research scientist arrested for providing information to Pak agent
text_fieldsPune: The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) has arrested a scientist working for the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) for allegedly providing information to a Pakistani agent.
According to an ATS official, the scientist was in touch with a Pakistan Intelligence Operative via Whatsapp and video calls. "It was a case of a honeytrap."
The accused scientist has been identified as Pradeep Kurulkar, reported Mid-day.com.
An ATS release said that the scientist misused his position despite knowing that the secrets in his possession if obtained by the enemy country can pose a threat to the security of the country, provided the details to the enemy country. "An offence under relevant sections of the Official Secrets Act has been registered with Kalachowki unit of the ATS in Mumbai and further probe is on."
"Despite holding a responsible position, the DRDO official misused his post thereby compromising sensitive government secrets. The Anti-Terrorism Squad of Maharashtra Police, Kalachowki, Mumbai, has filed a case under Section 1923 of the Official Secrets Act 1923 and other relevant sections," said the ATS release.
The accused held a senior position in the premier defence research institute in Pune.
