India to export two BrahMos missile batteries to Indonesia in $200 million deal
text_fieldsIndia will supply Indonesia with two batteries of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles under a $200 million defence deal signed between the two countries on Tuesday, according to top officials.
The agreement is part of a broader package of defence cooperation that also includes Astra air-to-air missile systems, defence technology transfers and maritime security.
A BrahMos battery typically consists of four launchers, 12 ready-to-fire missiles, and supporting equipment and vehicles, although the configuration may vary depending on operational requirements.
With the agreement, Indonesia becomes the third country to import the BrahMos missile system from India, after the Philippines and Vietnam. The Philippines purchased three BrahMos batteries in 2022, while Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh confirmed in May at the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore that India had signed a missile export deal with Vietnam and that negotiations with Indonesia were in the final stages.
India has also been in discussions with at least six other countries for the export of the missile system.
The BrahMos missile is developed through a joint venture between the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Russia's NPO Mashinostroyeniya. Discussions on the Indonesia deal were held during the third India-Indonesia Defence Ministers' Dialogue in New Delhi in November last year.
The BrahMos missile has been inducted into all three branches of the Indian armed forces and was used during Operation Sindoor to strike designated targets inside Pakistan.
BrahMos Aerospace Private Ltd is also seeking to export the missile system and its next-generation variant, BrahMos NG, to around 10 countries, including South Africa, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Egypt.
Work is also underway to increase the range of existing BrahMos missiles from 290 km to 500 km for land attack missions and from 290 km to 400 km for ship attack missions.
