India says no to Pakistan; Islamabad remains outside BRICS

Moscow: Pakistan has once again failed to secure membership of the BRICS grouping, despite seeking Russia’s support for its bid. Pakistan’s latest attempt to join the international bloc has failed amid strong opposition from India.

Pakistan formally applied for BRICS membership in 2023. However, India strongly opposed granting membership to Pakistan.

Under the existing rules, a new country can join BRICS only with the full support of all existing member states. India has veto power within the grouping, making it impossible for Pakistan to secure membership without India’s approval.

Pakistan was also left out last year when BRICS expanded into BRICS Plus by admitting Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the UAE, with India opposing Pakistan’s inclusion.

Pakistan, which is facing a severe economic crisis, has been seeking membership as part of efforts to find new sources of financial support.

BRICS, which initially comprised Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, has grown into a major international grouping. Pakistan is among 29 countries currently waiting to join the bloc.
