At 18,346, India records lowest single-day rise in Covid cases since early March
text_fieldsIndia reported the lowest single-day rise in COVID-19 cases in 209 days with 18,346 new infections in the last 24 hours - the country had reported 20,799 cases yesterday. At least 263 deaths due to coronavirus were also recorded in the last 24 hours.
The top five states which have registered maximum number of Covid-19 cases are Kerala with 8,850 cases, followed by Maharashtra with 3,165 cases, Mizoram with 1,681 cases, Tamil Nadu with 1,467 cases and West Bengal with 601 cases.
Colleges and other higher education institutions in Kerala have opened up for students after a gap of one-and-a-half years, with COVID-19 protocols in place.
The maximum casualties were also reported in Kerala with 149 fatalities, followed by Maharashtra with 26 deaths.
The active caseload has fallen to 2,52,902, a low of 201 days, which is less than one per cent of the total infections registered so far since the pandemic struck early last year at 3,38,53,048.
The ministry further said the recovery rate at 97.93 per cent was its highest since March 2020 with 29,639 people being cured from the disease during the day taking the total recoveries to 3,31,50,886.
The Indian Council of Medical Research said the cumulative count of samples tested so far stood at 57,53,94,042 which included 11,41,642 samples checked on Monday.
According to the health ministry, India has administered a total of 72,51,419 Covid vaccine doses in the last 24 hours.
Uttar Pradesh on Monday became the first state to have administered over 11 crore doses of the Covid-19 vaccine. As per data from the CoWin portal updated till 9 pm, the total number of doses administered in Uttar Pradesh was 11.07 crore.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court on Monday accepted the centre's submission that ₹ 50,000 compensation will be paid to the relatives of those who died after contracting the coronavirus. The financial compensation - that will include past and future deaths related to the virus - will be provided in addition to the existing schemes launched by the states.
