The Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Pune has withdrawn a book authored by jailed activist Umar Khalid from its library, citing concerns that its availability could lead to confusion or unrest, according to a report by The Indian Express.

The book, Fractured Communities: Adivasi Histories and the Politics of Power, was published earlier this year. Based on Khalid’s doctoral research at Jawaharlal Nehru University, it explores the history of Adivasi communities in Jharkhand’s Singhbhum region during British rule.

The decision followed a social media post highlighting the book’s presence in the institute’s library. Madabhushi Madan Gopal, chairperson of IISER Pune’s board of governors, expressed disapproval of its inclusion and said the book had subsequently been withdrawn. He also indicated that action would be taken against those responsible for its addition.

Khalid has been in prison for more than six years in connection with the conspiracy case linked to the February 2020 riots in northeast Delhi. He and several other accused, including activist Sharjeel Imam, face charges under anti-terror legislation and other laws. The case concerns violence that killed 53 people and left hundreds injured during protests for and against the Citizenship Amendment Act.

Police have alleged that the violence was part of a broader conspiracy linked to the protests. Khalid and the other accused have yet to face trial in the case.
