Huge difference between Vajpayee and the current people: NCP leader Ajit Pawar

Pune: Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Ajit Pawar said the Opposition MVA alliance of Maharashtra will take on the issue of disqualification of 16 MLAs during the assembly session in July.

Ajit Pawar’s reaction comes after Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance urged Shinde government to resign on moral grounds following the Supreme Court verdict.

Earlier, taking a swipe at the BJP-led government in Maharashtra, Ajit Pawar said that Shinde will not resign on moral grounds.

Attacking the BJP’s central leadership, Ajit Pawar pointed out there is a difference between former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee and today's leadership, saying ‘We know he will not resign even in his dreams. There is a huge difference between former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee and the current people.’

He said Shinde camp could have been disqualified if a new Speaker had been elected after Congress leader Nana Patole stepped down as Speaker without apprising chief minister Uddhav Thackeray at the time.

‘If we had our Speaker, then those 16 MLAs would have been disqualified,’ he reportedly said.

Sanjay Raut, a top leader in Uddhav Thackeray faction, called the Shinde administration as ‘illegal and formed against the Constitution’.

Meanwhile, Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said the Supreme Court verdict is ‘victory of democracy and the democratic process’.

A five-judge Constitution bench on Thursday said it could not reinstate Uddhav Thackeray as chief minister, disqualifying the Eknath Shinde-led Maharashtra government after Thackeray had chosen to resign, rather than proving the strength in the Assembly.
