Agra: In a deliberate attempt to create violence and disharmony, a group of Hindutva extremists slaughtered cows here during Ram Navami celebrations, India Today reported, citing Uttar Pradesh police’s account.

In connection with the incident, police arrested four youngsters during the celebrations of the Etmaduddaula area in Agra through a raid. The arrestees belong to Bharat Hindu Mahasabha, and police said that the names of multiple office bearers of the extremist organisation also came connected with the cow slaughter plot.

Police said that the Hindu Mahasabha’s national spokesperson, Sanjay Jat was the prime conspirator, while many members of the organisation were involved in the conspiracy.

Police have arrested two, named Imran alias Thakur and Shanu, named in the FIR.

Shanu told police that they killed a cow roaming around there and later lodged an FIR about cow slaughter at Etmaduddaula police station.

However, some members of the Hindu Mahasabha complained against those involved in the conspiracy, saying that they themselves killed the cow to deliberately create communal chaos in Agra during Ram Navami.

In certain states in the north, including West Bengal, Ram Navami celebrations witnessed clashes between communities. These include stoning, sloganeering, usage of explosives etc., injuring many.

People were attacked, shops ransacked and vandalised, and vehicles were destroyed.
